Immortalized onstage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan (Ariana Ballerini of Yardley) and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller (Cameron Flurry of Newtown). Winner of the 1960 TONY Award for Best Play, The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. With scenes of intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie's success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: "water."
Newtown Arts Company is offering a special $2 student discount for all performances. Students must show ID when purchasing tickets at the door; younger students without ID should mention their school. Discount tickets may be reserved and/or purchased via credit card by emailing email@example.com; they will be held for pick up and payment at the Box Office on day of performance.
Sign-language interpretation will be provided at the Sunday matinee on June 14.
"The Miracle Worker is a family show that focuses not only on Helen Keller's remarkable awakening brought about by Annie Sullivan, but also on the growth and triumphs of Annie and of Helen's family,” said the show’s director, James McCrane of Newtown. “It serves as inspiration to us all. This cast is experienced, talented, hard working and up to the challenge, skillfully delivering heart-felt characters that will entertain and move audiences.
